Many people are familiar with casino craps and know how to play the pass line or don’t pass, but few are aware of the wide range of betting possibilities available. A proposition can be gambled on any throw of the dice, in any combination. A proposition bet is placed in the proposition box, which is positioned in the center of the table and contains the hardway bets.
Hop bets, often known as hopping or on the hop, are another term for these esoteric proposition bets. A hop bet is a single-roll wager that will win or lose on the next roll of the dice. A player may, for example, place a wager on six-two hopping, which implies betting that the following roll will be an eight that came as a six and a two (not as four-four or five-three).
Some one-roll bets are highly popular, and they have specific locations on the game layout. A wager on eleven or twelve, or even the entire horn, is technically a hop bet, although the phrase is typically reserved for unusual or infrequently placed bets. A hop bet on six-two or four-one is simply placed beside the proposal box using a little button called hop. The game’s dealers will keep track of who owns which bet.
Hop bets on non-craps or eleven rolls are quite uncommon. Mostly because most individuals are uninformed that such wagers are possible, but partly because the odds of winning such wagers are slim to none. Winning hop bets have a low chance but a large payout. Non-pair hop bets, such as three-two or five-four, pay 15 to 1 or 16 to 1 depending on the casino. Depending on the casino, a hop wager on a paired roll such as four-four or two-two pays 30 to 1 or 31 to 1. A hopping hardway is another term for a hop bet on a paired roll.
People gamble on hops for pleasure, and their whims inspire them to do so. Any successful craps betting strategy excludes hop bets. When a shooter has been rolling for a while but the point number has yet to be determined, a player is likely to place a hop bet. The point number could then gamble on the spot. If the point is nine, the player may choose to wager five-four and six-three jumping, for example. This is done during the tense moments of the game as a method to cheer for the point total. If the player’s hop bet wins, it’s a huge bonus.
A player might occasionally grow infatuated by proposition bets and waste money that would have been better spent on the pass line or don’t pass. Players who make wagers like all the hardways jumping or all the sixes and eights hopping on a regular basis will rapidly run out of money.
Obscure hop bets should be played only on rare occasions, if at all. The odds are stacked against them, and they’re squandering their money. However, they have a high level of entertainment value, and yelling out that you wish to jump the point number will wow the other players and your friends. And that may happen, and you’ll feel really brilliant for a little period of time.
